Christmas: a foundation for unity

The photo above represents the fragmentation that we have experienced in 2020. Cracks and separations from our families and loved ones, from our church friends, from our co-workers. In this context, I am reminded of the passage in Ephesians 4:3-4: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called.”

Notice Paul’s words, “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.” He is not exhorting us to create unity, but to maintain unity. Unity is to be the normal state of the body of Christ. Sadly, given our circumstances, it doesn’t feel that way most days. And yet, this is where we exercise faith, trusting in the promise of God to enable us to live out the unity of the Spirit even though we are physically separated and emotionally distanced. It's Jesus' coming at Christmas that is provides us with the potential for unity.

Our connection is enhanced by our prayerful support and care for one another, even from afar. Affirming our connection in Christ allows us to see the photo, not as separated pixels, but as a loving whole.

I want to take the opportunity to say "Merry Christmas from the Katagi family!"
